An independent filmmaker, writer, and producer, Silas Rowland’s imagination has always searched for a creative outlet. What began as brainstorming novel ideas with his younger brother eventually led him to the camera, which became his go-to creative outlet.
Growing up, he experimented with cameras by creating skateboard videos. He realized he could channel his passion for storytelling through the camera in order to visually bring his stories to life. His YouTube channel, sighlus, has over one thousand subscribers, and highlights his 2025 independent horror film, “All That is Evil.”
For Silas, filmmaking is more than just a set of rules and techniques: it is experimental and expressive. He attributes the practice’s unique ability to create various forms of art, rendering it ‘inherently subjective.’ “Two filmmakers can approach the exact same story in completely different ways, and both can be valid and powerful,” he says, “That freedom to explore ideas, take creative risks, and translate imagination into something visual is what makes the job both unusual and incredibly rewarding.”
Silas encourages emerging filmmakers to embrace their inner self-critic as a tool for growth and improvement. It is not meant to “sabotage your confidence, but to constantly evaluate what you’re making, learn from it, and keep pushing yourself to improve.” From pen and paper to the camera, he aims to tell stories that not only connect with people, but prompt different pathways of thinking, feeling, and seeing.
