    About

The art of dance has always been part of Angela Gallo’s life. For thirty years, she has worked as a choreographer and movement artist, creating work in contemporary dance, film, and multimedia. She believes the body is an instrument for art, and that it should be properly maintained, protected, and aware of its limits as part of the practice.

Angela runs two organizations out of Columbia, South Carolina. She serves as the Artistic Director of Sapphire Moon Dance Company and Executive Director of The Movement Lab at NOMA, a creative arts and wellness space. Both reflect the same belief that movement is not just performance; it is a way of existing in the world. Both Angela’s artistic spheres emphasize the importance of caring for the body and mind equally for an optimal and enjoyable experience.

Her work blends dance with film and text, mixing multiple mediums into one performance. The restlessness and curiosity burning inside her has kept the practice alive for over three decades in the world of dance. After such an expansive time, Angela carries the challenge and the reward of it with equal honesty and reverence.

She knows from experience that artists who last are the ones who show up first and stay curious. Her advice to those willing to put the work in is simple. “Have determination and resilience,” she says. “Commitment to the craft is very important. Seek feedback from others in the field and always keep learning.”
